So one day last year Yukio asked me to make some music togehter. Since we´re both acitve in the Dubtechno genre, this was a very nice idea and we thought about spending some days in summertime together and produce some tracks that we could possibly release later on Petite Victory Collective.
We met again in Berlin at the Superbooth 24, decided about being together in August and have a quality time. Shortly after that, I was asked to perform with Yukio at 'Strøm på Roskilde', a little event that was organized by our mate Carsten aka 'Under Red Skies'. I agreed of course, which actually pushed our work into a different direction from then.
The production schedule
Luckily, Yukio hosted me for the time being in Copenhagen so we had plenty of time. After arrival, we made a little plan which was like follows:
Day 1: hooking up our gear and build the dawless dubtechno setup
Day 2: check the tracks that we had on our machines
Day 2: first rehearsal
Day 3: adjustments and jams
Day 3: final rehearsal
Day 4: Live performance
Day 5: Travel day
Since I stayed 5 days, this seemed to be a very comfortable schedule. And after hooking up and playing the first jams together, we both knew that this was going to be a very fun project.
Working on the Dawless Dubtechno Set
I had actually erased my machine the day before I left home, just some samples have been on the Analog Rytm so I literally started from scratch after arriving in Denmark. I took every free minute to work on some patterns which I tailored to the full tracklist and Yukios material.
After first rehearsals discovered that our music was a very good match together (thats actually no surprise), and we decided that the structure of the full set would be an interplay between my tracks and Yukios tracks, smoothly blended with spontanous transitions from both of us.
This concept worked very well and after a few rehearsals we have been super happy with the outcomes.
After the final rehearsal was done, we where super happy but didn´t want to stop being creative! So we hooked up a Tanzbär drum machine and started a spontanuous Minimal House jam. This turned out to be so good that we decided to play it live on stage the other day on top the Dubtechno set - without any preparation, totally free. What a joy! Totally loved it.
The Dawless Dubtechno performance
The entire event on Saturday went super smooth. Our friend Giom aka 'Atlas Castle' joined and supported us the entire day.
Here´s a video recording of the first part, the Dawless Dubtechno performance. I also provided the mastered audio download on my community board (Thanks Yukio for the great mastering).
The Dawless Setups
I have the habit to 3D scan a lot of my setups and this one was no exception. My hardware part was of course limited due to my little hand luggage suitcase.
59 Perlen: Elektron Analog Rytm MKII, Erica Synths Zen Delay
Yukio Bergholdt: Polyend Tracker, Polyend Tracker +, Twisted Electronics Mega FM, Allen & Heath PX5, 1010 Music Lemondrop and 3 effect pedals (sorry I can't remember their names)
Reactions and Feedback
I think the event and our performances went very smooth and we received some really nice love after we finished our set. I´m already looking forward going back to Copenhagen in November for Sonic Playground 2024 where I gonna perform with Bernardo San Rafael.
